‘Get the shotgun’ foils store holdup

Two men tried to rob a convenience store west of downtown early Thursday, but ran off when the clerk made mention of a shotgun, according to a Fort Wayne police report.

Shortly after 1 a.m., the men came into the Pop Shop at West Main and Center streets. When the clerk saw one of the men carrying a handgun, she yelled to the owner, “Get the shotgun,” the report stated.

By the time the owner, who was in the store’s office, came out with the shotgun, the would-be robbers had fled and were headed south toward Elm Street, the report said.

The man with the handgun was 6-foot, 180 pounds, white and in his 20s. He wore a green military-style jacket, green pants, a brown knit stocking hat and a matching scarf that covered much of his face. The second man was about the same height and weight and wore a camouflage jacket.

An officer with a police dog searched the area, but the men were not found, the report said.
