Indy first lady, leaders appeal for typhoon aid

– The first lady of Indianapolis is among leaders appealing for financial donations for typhoon relief in her native Philippines.

Winnie Ballard, the wife of Mayor Greg Ballard, said Thursday that any assistance that can be provided will help people who have lost everything. She says Filipinos desperately need help. She immigrated from the Philippines to the U.S. in the 1980s.

The Indiana Pacers Foundation announced a donation of $50,000 to the relief efforts through the U.N. World Food Programme. The Pacers toured the Philippines last month before playing an exhibition game with the Houston Rockets in front of a sold-out crowd in Manila.

People are being encouraged to donate through the American Red Cross, United Way of Central Indiana or the U.N. World Food Programme.
