INDIANAPOLIS – Attorney General Greg Zoeller is warning Indiana residents that scammers are springing up eager to take money intended for typhoon relief in the Philippines.
He encourages the public to verify relief organizations are reputable before donating to avoid being ripped off.
The Attorney General’s Office offers these tips:
– People should donate to established organizations with track records of organizing and providing relief.
– They should initiate donations themselves rather than responding to online, direct mail or phone solicitations, and they should pay by check.
– Some phony charitable organizations use names that are very similar to those of respected organizations.
– The website www.CharityNavigator.org can help identify legitimate relief organizations and determine how much of their donations go to victims rather than overhead.
