Bayh joins Mideast policy institute

The Washington Institute for Near East Policy has announced that Evan Bayh, a former Indiana governor and U.S. senator, has joined its board of advisers.

The institute describes itself as “an independent, nonpartisan research institution that seeks to advance a balanced and realistic understanding of American interests in the Middle East and to promote the policies that secure them.”

In a news release, the institute called Bayh “a leading centrist voice on intelligence and national security issues” when he was a Democratic member of the Senate from 1999 through 2010. He is an adviser for Apollo Global Management, a partner at the law firm McGuireWoods and a contributor for Fox News.

Bayh is among six new members of the institute’s board of advisers. Others include former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and retired Marine Corps Gen. John Allen, who commanded NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Existing members include former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, ex-CIA Director James Woolsey and U.S. News & World Report publisher Mortimer Zuckerman.
