SACS to transfer 77 to balance enrollment

– More than 70 students in the Chestnut Hills subdivision will be attending a new school next fall.

Southwest Allen County Schools board members voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a SACS redistricting plan, which calls for transferring 77 students in the Chestnut Hills subdivision, off Illinois Road, from Covington Elementary to Deer Ridge Elementary next fall.

While next year’s fifth-graders from Chestnut Hills have the option of finishing their final elementary school year at Covington, their younger siblings would be required to shift to Deer Ridge, according to the proposal.

Most of the district’s elementary schools are at 83 percent to 85 percent capacity. Covington is at 91 percent capacity, while Deer Ridge is at 73.2 percent.

The redistricting changes will bring Covington’s capacity to 82.1 percent and Deer Ridge to 88.6 percent capacity, according to the district.

The district’s two middle schools and four other elementary schools – Aboite, Haverhill, Lafayette Meadows and Whispering Meadows – will not be affected by the changes.
