  • Today's K's coverage, more
Make sure you check out this story on the Komets, who are off to a 3-0-0 start heading into tonight's game at Memorial Coliseum against the Missouri Mavericks. Remember them from the CHL?
  • Postgame reaction, video from Komets 3-2 victory
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- I'm not going to say these have been the best three games I've seen the Komets play to start a season -- and I've covered 18 seasons -- but this has to be the most exciting season-opening set I've seen.
  • Komets beat Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In what had become a heated game, Shawn Szydlowski capped a 3-2 overtime victory for the Komets on Friday by stealing the puck in the Kalamazoo Wings zone and then sending a wrist shot past the goal with 49 seconds remaining.

Too early to panic

My personal opinion is it's too early to panic about the Komets' season. They've played seven of 72 games.

With only two of them at Memorial Coliseum.

I'm not saying that a 2-3-2 record is anything to brag about. And it is deplorable that they held a lead in each of the five losses, though I maintain losing in a shootout is more about luck than anything.

But honestly, you've got an almost entirely new roster. It takes a little time. You have to get acclimated to each other and you have to weed out the players who don't belong.

That's a process.

And while I know a lot of fans are blaming the lack of an affiliation for the mediocrity, I don't buy that. (This isn't to say I don't think they should affiliate.) But if you are saying the Komets are losing because they don't have a parent club, then you are saying the Komets don't have enough talent. And if they don't have enough talent, how are they getting the leads that they are blowing?

What they are experiencing is a lack of consistency and/or a lack of smarts. Solvable problems, I believe.

I wasn't before, but I'm with you on this idea of conditioning. If the team is sinking late, that would seem to fit.
