Web letter by Ken Scheffler: New American Revolution needed to restore government of the people

I think the Egyptians got it right with regard to an ineffective government. I tip my hat to the Egyptian people. Keep in mind, they have been around since 6000 B.C., so they know a thing or two about governing under different systems. When faced with a democratically elected government that failed to provide governmental services, they demonstrated in the streets, and eventually the military took over.

Here in the U.S., we are faced and hamstrung with our own government that chooses not to deliver the services we pay taxes for. I have no problem with our military storming the Capitol building in D.C. and the White House and taking over.

It should not come as a surprise to anyone that we live in a democracy in name only. We have no civil liberties anymore thanks to anti-terrorist legislation that labels us all potential terrorists. We have no semblance of privacy anymore with the NSA running amok and monitoring our every cellphone call, social network post and keystroke we make on a website.

If our democratically elected president, senators and congressman cannot deliver the necessary services that we pay for, I think Army Rangers can keep our nation’s memorials, national parks and museums open for the benefit of the veterans for whom they were built and families on vacation and foreign tourists whose money and goodwill we can surely use.

I’m sure Green Berets can get vouchers to women with young children who need help in getting nutritious food for their babies (WIC); I am confident that Special Ops forces could deliver what’s needed to keep Head Start programs running throughout the country; and I am convinced that Navy Seals could get benefit checks out to the beneficiaries of our fallen soldiers and transport their grieving families to Dover Air Force Base to receive their heroes’ bodies.

We have morphed from a government “of the people, by the people, for the people” to a government “of the money, by the money, for the money” for every deep-pocketed corporation and special-interest group. As the father of a Marine veteran, I am ashamed to be an American whose political system has disintegrated, period. It’s time we had a new revolution, blow up what’s not working and start over.
