Cadets' 'D' steps up

Concordia got downright defensive in a surprising three-game sweep of Class 3A No. 1 Mishawaka Marian in the finals of the Plymouth Class 3A Semistate on Saturday.

The Cadets won 25-23, 25-19, 25-22.

Concordia seemingly wouldn't let anything hit the floor early in the match, and then put up a wall along the net when the games got close.

"We owned the net," Concordia coach Trish Miller said. "We played unbelievable defense tonight."

Wisconsin recruit Tionna Williams led the Cadets, who play Brebeuf in the 3A title match at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Ball State, with 10 digs and eight blocks. Te'Ayla Whitfield had four blocks.

"Once you get going, the momentum definitely builds up," Williams said. "That really helped (with the defense)."

Miller also coached the Woodlan team to the 2A state semifinals in 2007.
