iPhone deal ends in gunpoint holdup

A Kokomo man who drove all the way to Fort Wayne to buy an iPhone 5 told police that he was instead robbed at gunpoint.

The man told police that he responded to an offer on Craigslist and arranged to meet the person he believed to be the seller around lunchtime Tuesday at a Georgetown Square business. When he got there, an exchange of text messages directed him to a house on Monarch Drive.

The robber got into the car and asked the victim to take him to a store to get cigarettes, police said. When they got near Duprey Drive, the victim told police, the robber pointed a gun in the victim’s face, demanding he empty his pockets. The robber also grabbed a backpack with the victim’s laptop.

Police said the house on Monarch was for sale and unoccupied, and the for-sale sign was later found leaning against the west side of the building.

The robber was described as tall, in his early to middle 20s, and black. He had a “bigger build” and what appeared to be a bruise on his lower lip, according to a police supplemental report. Police said he was wearing black dress pants and a red and black jacket at the time of the robbery.
