Notre Dame will be without starting nose guard Louis Nix III for a second game in a row.
Coach Brian Kelly told reporters Thursday that Nix will not play when the Irish (6-2) play host to Navy (4-3) on Saturday. Nix didn't play in last week's win over Air Force because of tendinitis in his knee.
Nix will not be in uniform this weekend, but he was able to practice more this week, Kelly said.
"He's getting closer but really didn't get enough work for us to play him against an option team," Kelly said.
There was good news in regards to injuries for Notre Dame.
Kelly said starting left guard Chris Watt, who injured his knee against Air Force, and starting defensive end Sheldon Day, who re-tweaked his ankle against the Falcons, practiced with the first-team units Thursday and will play Saturday.
Safety Elijah Shumate, who missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, worked with the second-team defense and will play against Navy.
"(Shumate is) playing one of our outside-inverted positions," Kelly said. "You like to just let him go, there's some thinking there that you don't want to slow down a guy like Elijah sometimes. You want to let him go. We like his athletic ability. He's probably not at 100 percent yet, but he's definitely at a position where he can get on the field and help us this weekend."
