Afternoon fire guts Smith Street house

A two-story home was heavily damaged in a fire east of Weisser Park on Thursday.

Firefighters were called to 3218 Smith St. about 1 p.m., the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.

No one was at home at the time of the fire.

The house had heavy fire, water and smoke damage, the department said. The cause is under investigation.

The blaze was down the street from a shooting last week that killed an 18-year-old and badly wounded another.
