Boyfriend charged with battering 3-year-old boy

– A mother's boyfriend, who was baby-sitting her 3-year-old son, allegedly abused the boy and gave him several bruises, according to court papers.

Brandon Sprinkle, 28, was charged Wednesday in Allen Superior Court with felony counts of battery and neglect of a dependent.

The boy's mother told police she left her son with Sprinkle on Aug. 27 while she was at work. After coming home, she noticed the bruises, court papers stated.

Early Aug. 28, the couple took the boy, who had bruises on his legs, arms, both sides of his head and a large bruise on his pelvic area, court papers said, to Lutheran Hospital. Fort Wayne police were later called to the hospital to investigate, records showed.

A pediatrician told police the boy's "pattern of injury is extremely worrisome and indicative of inflicted injury. These are not the types of injuries one would expect in typical playing," records stated.

In an interview with police, Sprinkle acknowledged that he spanked the boy on the buttocks and hit his lower legs with a wooden spoon to get his attention. Sprinkle also reported that the boy ran into a wall while they were playing and hurt his head. But Sprinkle could not or would not explain the boy's other injuries, court papers stated.

Sprinkle, of the 7900 block of Decatur Road, was being held Wednesday at the Allen County Lockup in lieu of $25,000 bail.
