Baked goods touted at new Winona Lake spot

I told my 2-year-old that we do not, in fact, eat candy for breakfast – no matter how much whining takes place.

Lucky for me, he has yet to figure out Facebook. Otherwise, he would have seen a photo of a seemingly breakfast-appropriate scone that was drizzled with chocolate and dotted with M&Ms from Light Rail Café and Roaster.

The spot recently opened at the Village at Winona Lake and serves a variety of baked goods, including that scone, salads, sandwiches and pizzas.

“We roast and serve our own coffee,” manager Katie Squires adds.

The 1000 Park Ave. restaurant is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Squires says they’re still new but plan to post the full menu on its Facebook page, http://on.fb.me/16pWCoy.

Flat Top closes for fixes

Flat Top Grill has been at Jefferson Pointe quite awhile – 11 years to be exact – and there were some things that needed some attention, manager Lyndsey Ingold says.

In order to update and fix things, the restaurant closed after dinner service Sunday and will not reopen until 4 p.m. Friday.

“It’s literally pretty much everything,” she says of the work being done.

There will be new floors installed, and the booths will be reupholstered. Bathrooms and the bar will be remodeled, and new tabletops are being built. Walls will be painted and new kitchen equipment will be put in.

The makeover isn’t part of a new corporate look but rather a company effort to keep restaurants up-to-date and in good condition for guests, Ingold says.

Cuban eatery opens

Cayo Largo is a small and quiet island just south of Cuba in the Caribbean Sea. It’s also a small and quiet restaurant on the south side of Fort Wayne.

The Cuban-American restaurant opened this month at 2801 Lower Huntington Road, serving fare such as black beans, soup and sandwiches. There’s the traditional Cuban sandwich, as well as a steak version, and hamburger for those who prefer the American side.

There are also specials, such as Monday’s Palomilla Steak with Rice and Garbanzo beans.

Hours were posted as 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Museum mixology

Science Central exhibits often showcase that the subject is fun for everyone, regardless of age. On Nov. 1, though, the museum at 1950 N. Clinton St. is going to focus on the 21 and older set.

“Mixology 301: The Science of Cocktails,” a fundraiser, will feature two mixologists – Arthur Black, a wine and food professional from Miami, and Tim Atz, a Kendallville native who graduated at the top of his class from the Professional Bartending School of America. The two will prepare specialty cocktails and present lessons on the science behind cocktails.

Ivy Tech culinary students will conduct food demonstrations with cutting-edge gastronomic tools, as well as cater the event. A sampling of the evening’s menu includes: lettuce spring rolls with red pepper aioli, lobster grapefruit shooters, crab and avocado spoons, smoked firecracker shrimp, carved flank steak sliders with Asian slaw, cheesecake pops and fall-spiced truffles.

•East State Coney, 2831 E. State Blvd., is celebrating its fourth anniversary on Friday with a free drink for dine-in customers. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

•The Stand, 5200 Bluffton Road, will close for the season on Nov. 2. But don’t despair – an opening date for its 10th season has been set. Coneys and ice cream treats will be back on March 3.

•Banh Mi Barista, 5320 Coldwater Road, is hosting a dinner that will showcase different ways to prepare fish. The menu includes Vietnamese braised fish in clay pot, stuffed halibut, walleye rice soup and, for dessert, coconut dream bowl. Tickets for the event, which is at 7 p.m. Nov. 6, are $40.
