3 matchups to watch
IU defense vs. Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner: The Wolverines go as their junior quarterback goes, and Gardner has been both prolific and confounding for Michigan this season. The 6-foot-4 dual-threat quarterback has 11 passing touchdowns and six more on runs, as well as 1,276 passing yards and 439 rushing yards. But he also has thrown 10 interceptions and has completed just 58.9 percent of his passes. The Hoosiers have not done well against dual-threat quarterbacks this season, including Missouri’s James Franklin, who threw for a career-high 343 yards, ran for 61 and had three total touchdowns in the Tigers’ 45-28 win against IU on Sept. 21.
IU quarterback Nate Sudfeld vs. IU quarterback Tre Roberson: Coach Kevin Wilson seems to have carved out roles for Sudfeld, the pass-first sophomore, and Roberson, a redshirt sophomore who is more of a run-focused dual-threat option. But Roberson made the position battle interesting again against Michigan State, completing 11 of 17 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Sudfeld went 14 for 30 for 137 yards. Both threw an interception. The Michigan defense, like its quarterback, has been inconsistent. Although it gives up 320 yards per game, good for No. 13 in the country, the Wolverines are No. 44 in scoring defense, with 23.3 points per game thanks to bad field position and big plays. Roberson, with that added running dimension and his performance against the Spartans, might be in line for more playing time today.
Indiana vs. history: The numbers from years past don’t play in the Hoosiers’ favor, to put it lightly. IU has lost its last 17 games against Michigan, and the last win against the Wolverines was in 1987 in Bloomington during a downpour at Memorial Stadium. You have to go back two more decades, to 1967, for the last Hoosier victory at Michigan Stadium.
Prediction: Michigan 40, Indiana 32
