Fire routs 29 at north-side hotel

A north-side inn was evacuated Thursday morning after a heating unit caught fire.

Firefighters were called to the Avenir Inn, 1005 W. Washington Center Road, at 8:18 a.m. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from Room 308.

All 29 people at the hotel were evacuated as a precaution and later were allowed to return, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.

The unoccupied room had moderate smoke damage, along with minor fire and water damage, the department said.
