Hispanic coalition to stage vigil on immigration legislation

FORT WAYNE – The Hispanic Leadership Coalition of Northeast Indiana is planning a vigil Sunday in support of comprehensive immigration reform.

The vigil will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. outside the Allen County Courthouse. The coalition described the event as “peaceful, non-partisan, interfaith, inclusive” in a news release issued Monday.

The coalition said it seeks for the U.S. House to approve legislation before year’s end “that emphasizes family unity, a path to legalization and earned citizenship for undocumented workers, a revamping of employment-related visas, rational border security measures, and the alignment of the enforcement of immigration laws with humanitarian values.”

The Senate passed an immigration bill by a 68-32 vote in late June. That legislation was praised at the time by Max Montesino, president of the board of the Hispanic Leadership Council.
