Verbatim: 2 injured when motorcycle strikes railroad crossing arms

A report received Monday morning:

A motorcycle driven by Michael Powell of Spencerville, IN was southbound on Cr. 59 approaching the railroad crossing south of Cr. 42. The crossing arms were down with the red lights activated and flashing.

Powell stated he did not see the crossing arms because the sun was shining in his eyes. When he did see the crossing arms were down he applied the brakes, but slid through the intersection striking the southbound crossing arm with the front of the motorcycle.

Both Powell and his passenger, Connie Cossairt of Auburn, IN, had face and head injuries and were flown to Parkview Hospital, in Ft. Wayne, by the Samaritan Helicopter.

Neither the driver nor passenger was wearing a helmet.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by: Butler Fire Rescue and DeKalb EMS.
