Juan Martin del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga closed in on qualifying for the ATP Finals with quarterfinal victories at the Shanghai Masters on Friday.

Del Potro had 27 winners and only eight unforced errors in a 6-3, 6-3 win over Spain's Nicolas Almagro.

Tsonga beat Germany's Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-3.

Del Potro, who moved back into the top five in the rankings this week, can clinch a berth in next month's year-end championships in London by reaching the final.

Tsonga is further back after missing several months with a knee injury, but he moved into the eighth and final qualifying spot with his win on Friday, just ahead of French compatriot Richard Gasquet.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal and defending champion Novak Djokovic played their quarterfinals late Friday.
