Tidbits from the caucus

It was a night to see and be seen at the caucus to choose a new House District 85 state representative.

Lots of politicos with no direct interest in the event schmoozed their way through the hour-long caucus, including several state reps and senators, former office holders and political insiders.

Allen County Republican Party Chairman Steve Shine took the time to plug next week's bean dinner.

When he mentioned U.S. Sen. Dan Coats will be speaking, Paul Lagemann -- a Coats staffer -- yelled "yay" from the audience. Then Shine said Indiana Republican Party Chairman Tim Berry would also speak.

Berry, from the wings, laughingly beseeched the crowd for his own cheer until Lagemann obliged.

Berry ran the caucus -- his first as state chairman -- and recalled sitting in the same chair as the candidates 23 years ago for his 1990 caucus for Allen County Treasurer. He even said some of the same people in the room voted back then.
