Victim of Melita Street slaying identified

A Fort Wayne man has been identified as the victim of a shooting in the 300 block of Melita Street, the Allen County coroner's office said.

Ricardo M. Hood, 33, died from a gunshot wound or wounds, and his death is the 35th homicide of the year for Fort Wayne and Allen County, the coroner's office said in a statement.

Police have said a man who appeared to be burglarizing a home Sunday night was shot by the armed homeowner.

"A ruling of homicide by the coroner means that an individual died as the result of an act of another human being, and does not necessarily imply criminal intent," the coroner's office statement said.

Police were called out to a reported shooting around 11:55 p.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they found an adult man on the front porch. Medics determined the man had died.

The homeowner, who was the only person in the residence at the time, was not injured and has not been charged.

Police believe the suspected burglar acted alone.

The incident remains under investigation by Fort Wayne police and the coroner's office.
