Fire causes $45,000 damage at lake home

A cooking fire badly damaged a home Thursday near West Otter Lake in Steuben County.

Orland, Salem, Angola and Hudson firefighters responded to the call about 4 p.m. to 9500 West County Road 100 South, according to a statement issued by the Orland Volunteer Fire Department. It said the kitchen was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The blaze was quickly extinguished, but damage estimates for the kitchen, attic and exterior of the house was estimated at $45,000 by the department.

The department said the homeowner at first tried to put out the fire himself and quickly got the family out. No injuries were reported.

The department said firefighters remained there for more that two hours.

Steuben County Communications, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police and REMC assisted the fire departments.
