FORT WAYNE – One man was killed and another wounded in shootings Friday afternoon at an apartment complex in northeast Fort Wayne, city police said.
Shortly after 2 p.m., reports of shots fired sent officers to Baldwin Creek Apartments along Hobson Road, near East State Boulevard.
By the sidewalk next to Building F, police found a man who had been shot. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Deputy Chief Paul Shrawder said. A doctor pronounced the victim dead upon arrival at the hospital, police said.
A second man showed up at a hospital on his own, saying a stray bullet from the shooting had struck him in the leg. He was treated at the hospital and released, and is being interviewed by police, who said they would determine whether the shootings are related.
Detectives are still trying to piece together what happened, but a preliminary investigation revealed that the shootings occurred in the hallway of Building F or in an apartment.
Near where the victim who died was found, a window of a first-floor apartment was broken out. Shrawder said that a victim may have gone through the window.
Police received reports that at least two men fled afterward in a black Dodge Charger. Officers located the Charger in a nearby neighborhood, police said, and it will be processed for evidence, but there was no one inside when it was found.
No arrests have been made, and no motive has been determined.
Officers arrested a man at the apartment complex on an unrelated charge, and Shrawder said investigators hoped to interview him about the shootings.
As a precaution, children who live in the area were not taken home from school immediately after the shootings. They were later escorted to their homes, according to a statement from Fort Wayne Community Schools.
