Remains ID’d as missing 18-year-old woman

A Kosciusko County woman went for a walk a year ago and was never heard from again. On Sunday, the skeletal remains of Aurora Shoemaker were found in a wooded area near her home.

Coroner Michael Wilson said it has been officially determined that the remains were those of Shoemaker, who had been missing since Aug. 16, 2012, according to a statement issued by the sheriff’s department.

Official determination was conducted by Stephen P. Nawrocki, a board-certified forensic anthropologist with the University of Indianapolis, and Craig Nelson, a forensic dentist with the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

Wilson also said that the investigation into the cause of her death is ongoing, with autopsy results expected to be completed on Friday.

Nawrocki and officers from the Kosciusko County Major Crimes Task Force processed the area where the remains were found.

Shoemaker lived at a mobile home park on along County Road 175 East.
