Glenda Ritz seeks cash

Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz is fishing for dollars in her first major post-election fundraiser.

In an email advisory sent Friday, Ritz talks about spending the first eight months in office reinforcing the importance of reading and a balanced curriculum, reducing the emphasis on testing, creating college and career pathways for all students, promoting respectful and positive learning and teaching environments, and creating a fair and transparent school accountability system.

"In spite of our early efforts to move ahead a progressive educational agenda in Indiana, we face opponents who want to reduce the importance of public schools, put roadblocks in our way and promote that my elected position should be a Governor-appointed position," she said.

Her fundraister will be Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Greenwood at the Indiana Carpenters Regional Council Administration Building. Light snacks, refreshments and live music will be provided.

"In order to continue to support our agenda, we need the resources to be politically competitive," the solicitation email said.

Ritz' most recent campaign finance report filed in July showed she had about $66,000 in cash on hand. But her campaign committee owed about $57,500, including $30,000 to her husband Gary. He loaned the money at the end of October in 2012 as the campaign hit its final days.
