New spinal disc surgery performed at Parkview

FORT WAYNE -- Dr. Gregory Hoffman, a surgeon with Ortho NorthEast, on Thursday performed the first double spinal disc replacement in the Great Lakes region using a procedure only recently given federal approval.

The procedure, performed at Parkview Ortho Hospital in Fort Wayne, was the second of its kind in the nation, Parkview officials said. The hospital participated in a trial that led to Food and Drug Administration approval.

Trial success rates for the Two-Level Mobi-C cervical disc replacement were 70 percent compared with 37 percent success for patients whose discs were fused during surgery, Parkview officials said.

"As the industry evolves, quality of life is at the forefront of driving innovation in the orthopedic industry," Julie Fleck, Parkview Ortho Hospital's chief operating officer, said in a statement.
