    The IPFW women’s volleyball was picked to finish second in the Summit League preseason poll of the league’s head coaches. The Mastodons received 53 points. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

Volleyball loses

The Mastodons lost 3-1 to former Summit League rival Oakland on Friday in each teams' first match in the Huskie Tournament in DeKalb, Ill.

Oakland (6-6) won 25-13, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23.

Junior Emily Spencer had 21 kills, Sarah Heckman had six blocks and four players in double-figure digs for IPFW (6-7).

Spencer's 21 kills were a match-high by 10 kills, with Heckman and Kendall Wienkes each had six kills for IPFW in the loss. Madison Spence had 35 assists, while Jen Milligan led the squad with 17 digs, followed by Spence with 13, Wienkes 12, and Este Stoffel with 10. Heckman's six blocks led the team, while Spence had five and Ripley four.

Dood led the Golden Grizzlies with 11 kills, while Amanda Baker had nine kills and eight blocks.

The Mastodons return to action later this evening when the squad faces off against tournament host Northern Illinois University.
