Blast from the past

Give Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini this much: He does the finest Lee Elia impersonation since Lee Elia.

For those unfamiliar with the reference, a little history: Elia was the Chicago Cubs manager who, 30 years ago, launched a postgame rant directed at booing fans in Wrigley Field that is the gold standard for every postgame rant before and since. It cannot be repeated here, this being a family Blob, but if you go online and type in "Lee Elia," "Cubs" and "rant," you'll find it.

You'll also be amazed at how remarkably Pelini's off-mike rant after a 2011 win over Ohio State evokes it.

The F-bombs. The trashing of a legendarily loyal fan base. And did we mention the F-bombs?

Just as it was stunningly empty-headed of Elia to rip the most loyal fans in baseball (pathetically so, considering), so was Pelini's ripping of the Cornhuskers fan base stunningly brain-dead. I mean, they've only sold out every home game for the last 51 years.

Pelini going on off them was almost as bad as ... well, as bad as his football team giving up 38 straight points at home Saturday in a 41-21 rump-roasting at the hands of UCLA.

Speaking of bombs, "F" or otherwise.
