Bishop Rhoades has surgery for fall injury

The Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, had surgery Thursday morning to repair a broken collarbone.

The bishop suffered the injury in a fall Sunday night while he was on his way to meetings in Washington, D.C., of the U.S. Conference of Bishops, diocesan spokesman Sean McBride said Thursday.

Rhoades returned to Fort Wayne on Wednesday night and had the surgery at a Fort Wayne hospital, McBride said. He said he could not say which hospital.

The bishop asked for privacy about the injury, he said.

The bishop’s upcoming schedule “is going to be an ongoing challenge, and it is going to be day by day as his condition allows,” McBride said.

He added: “I don’t know if he has even canceled anything.”
