McElvene to Dayton

New Haven senior center Steve McElvene committed to play basketball at Dayton on Thursday, Bulldogs coach Al Gooden confirmed in an email Friday.

"They let me know from the start that they needed me," McElvene told the Indianapolis Star.

McElvene tweeted that he had visited Dayton last Sunday.

The 6-foot-11, 285-pound McElvene had offers from Pittsburgh, Ball State, Wright State, Chicago State, Kansas State, Saint Louis and LaSalle, among others.

McElvene averaged 8.0 rebounds last year and was named to the All-NHC second-team.

McElvene helped lead the Bulldogs to their first sectional title since 1996 and made a name for himself with a great showing in the postseason.

McElvene moved to New Haven last year from Alabama.
