7 area colleges earn national recognition

– Several local colleges and universities have taken top marks on two national lists designed to recognize schools for their achievements.

Seven area schools were named to the U.S. News & World Report’s lists of top colleges and universities.

Huntington University was ranked 16th on the magazine’s Regional Colleges-Midwest list; Manchester University ranked 22nd; Trine University ranked 35th; and Grace College and Seminary was ranked 48th.

The University of Saint Francis was ranked 86th on the Regional Universities-Midwest list.

IPFW and Indiana Tech were named to the list but were not ranked.

Heralded by some and dismissed by others, the rankings try to measure academic quality by examining student retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, graduation rates, peer assessments and other factors.

All U.S. News rankings are available at USNews.com/colleges.

IPFW, Indiana Tech, Huntington University, Grace College, ITT Technical Institute and Western Governors University were named to the 2014 Military Friendly Schools list, compiled by Victory Media.

The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are working to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students.

This year’s list includes 1,868 colleges, universities and trade schools.
