Verbatim: Early morning beating victim in critical condition

A report received Wednesday morning from the Fort Wayne Police Department:

On Wednesday, 09/11/2013, at approximately 3:56 AM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 100 block of West Wayne Street reference a battery in progress.

Officers arrived on scene and located a male victim lying in the middle of Wayne Street. The victim was bleeding and was unresponsive.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital in serious condition. The victim's condition was downgraded to critical condition by a physician at the hospital.

Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and a potential suspect. At the conclusion of the interview, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office will determine if criminal charges are warranted. Crime Scene Technicians are processing the scene for evidence.

This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
