1 found dead in Lowell house explosion

LOWELL, Ind. – Authorities in northwestern Indiana say a man has been found dead after an explosion leveled one home and damaged a nearby house.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said the man’s body was found at the scene of Monday night’s blast along Indiana 2 near the town of Lowell but information about his identity wasn’t immediately released.

Lowell Fire Chief Clint Gorball told The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/1eyreFc) that when emergency crews arrived one home was leveled with debris scattered as far as 75 yards away and a neighboring house was engulfed in flames.

Gorball said a man missing after the explosion was a neighbor who was house-sitting at the home about 20 miles south of Gary.

Officials were investigating what caused the explosion.
