4 injured, house catches fire in crash

Four people were injured when two vehicles collided, causing one of them to strike a house that caught fire Thursday night in DeKalb County, police said.

Rene M. Hammitt, 43, of Corunna was westbound in a Chevrolet van on County Road 72 when she failed to stop at a stop sign on County Road 427 about 7 p.m. She struck a GMC sport utility vehicle driven by Scott W. Glendening, 43, of Fremont, police said.

The van rotated 180 degrees and came to a rest in the northwest corner of the intersection. The collision caused the SUV to go off the road and strike a home on County Road 72, police said.

Both the SUV and the home caught fire and were extensively damaged. No one was in the home at the time of the crash, police said.

Neither driver was injured in the crash, but four passengers from both vehicles were taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center for various injuries.

David E. Hammitt, 3, a passenger in the van, was treated for pain.

Passengers in the SUV were Carla C. Glendening, 41, who complained of chest pain; Chloe N. Glendening, 17, who had abrasions to her knee and elbow and pain in her arm and leg; and Bonnie L. Harbaugh, 72, who complained of chest pain, police said.
