4 escape house fire on Smith

A kitchen fire damaged a house Saturday afternoon on Fort Wayne's south side.

Two adults and two children escaped the home at 4615 Smith St., near South Anthony Boulevard and East Pettit Avenue, before firefighters arrived at 4:15 p.m., according to the city fire department.

With smoke coming from the back of the house and from the attic, crews entered the structure and doused flames in the kitchen, the department said.

The fire was under control seven minutes after firefighters showed up. The damage was moderate, and no one was hurt, the department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
