  • Overmatched Ritz failing the public
Education is one of the most important functions of our state government, and yet State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz continues to treat educational policy like it is her own political soapbox.
  • Inconsistent upkeep plagues I-469 stretches
I see a disparity in the condition of the Interstate 469 bypass from the north/northeast section in comparison to the south/southwest section.
  • Common Core disaster predictable, avoidable
The debate over Common Core in relation to teaching and learning effectiveness has presented a major distraction for teachers and building leaders.

Cheers & jeers

JEERS to the Color Me Rad 5K race on Aug. 24. Participants ejected colored dry powder into the air. Our pine trees, mulch, mailboxes, lawn furniture and cars were covered in purplish pink powder. Spy Run Avenue had orange grass and purple trees. Please consider hosting your event in an unpopulated area where you will not damage the environment and personal property. When is someone coming to clean up your mess?

LYNETTE JOHNSON Fort Wayne

CHEERS to principal Mark Bailey and his administration for providing giant freeze pops and ice-cold water to the Lane Middle School staff and students at the end of the day on Aug. 29. It was a much-needed cool treat after an extremely scorching week of learning. It’s great to be part of the Viking Nation!

MARY VENDRELY Fort Wayne

CHEERS to New Haven Street Department Superintendent Dave Jones and his staff. Only a couple of weeks into the East Allen County school year, I made a call to have some trees trimmed that were scraping the top of my school bus. Within a couple of days it was done. Thanks for your prompt service.

PAT BURE New Haven

CHEERS to the drivers of the hundreds of vehicles that stopped as we drove by around noon on Aug. 26. We were in a funeral procession leaving the funeral home on Dupont Road and heading south on our way to the Catholic Cemetery. This occurred the complete distance, with people traveling in the opposite direction stopping to let us proceed.

The Fort Wayne Police Department (of which the deceased was a retired member) was also grateful and honored, as well as the honor guard, traffic control, bagpipers and band members and (as a former member of the military) the trumpet player. Then they offered a meal and beverages at their clubhouse.

JIM STEINBACHER Churubusco LARY STEINBACHER Angola

CHEERS to Kathy Candioto for her letter of wisdom, “Pence’s new agency another swipe at Ritz” (Sept. 3). Glenda Ritz, an educator, was elected to the position of superintendent of education by voters (who are taxpayers) because we want her expertise in decision-making. She should not be undermined by political patriarchy, competition and unnecessary expense.
