Not so fast - Morris doesn't have a vote

Here's an interesting quirk in the House District 85 caucus set to replace retiring Rep. Phyllis Pond, R-New Haven.

Not all the precinct committeemen and women voting for her successor have to live in the district.

Allen County GOP Chairman Steve Shine explained that to run for a four-year precinct committee post a person must reside in the district. But if a vacancy occurs during that term he can appoint any Allen County registered voter who is a Republican.

Briefly Thursday, Rep. Bob Morris, R-Fort Wayne, thought he would be voting in Pond's caucus. He lives in and serves House District 84 in Fort Wayne but was appointed earlier this year by Shine to fill a vacancy.

He thought that vacancy was in Pond's district and said he looked forward to the caucus on Oct. 8.

But after word spread, a person who is running in the caucus doublechecked the precinct committeemen list and Morris' name wasn't on it.

Shine said a thorough vetting shows Morris was appointed within his own district - not Pond's.

Pond's resignation is effective Oct. 15. Anyone interested in being considered for the remainder of Pond's term must register with the Indiana Republican Party by 5 p.m. Oct. 4.

Her term runs through late 2014. She has served in the Indiana House since 1978.
