Lincoln scholar to lecture

Civil War and Abraham Lincoln scholar Dr. James M. McPherson will be the annual keynote speaker at the 2013 R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture.

This year’s lecture will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the theater on the lower level of the Allen County Public Library, 900 Library Plaza. McPherson’s lecture is entitled, “Lincoln and the West.”

McPherson is the author of several books, including “War on the Waters,” “For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War,” “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief,” “This Mighty Scourge,” “Ordeal by Fire: the Civil War and Reconstruction,” and “What They Fought For, 1861-1865.” He is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his book, “Battle Cry of Freedom.”

The annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture is presented by the Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana and the Friends of the Allen County Public Library. Admission into the lecture is free, and a post lecture reception will be held at the library.
