Suspect questioned after video store holdup

A man accused of robbing a north-side video store at gunpoint was captured Tuesday with the help of a police dog.

About 11 a.m., a man came into Family Video at 902 Goshen Ave., near Sherman Boulevard, carrying what looked like a sawed-off shotgun, said officer Michael Joyner, a Fort Wayne police spokesman.

The man approached the clerk, the only other person in the business, and demanded money. He then left through the front doors with an undisclosed amount of cash, Joyner said.

Police searched the neighborhood, and behind a used car lot across the street from the video store, an officer spotted a man who matched the physical description of the robber but wearing different clothes. After a brief exchange with the officer, the man fled south, running through backyards and jumping fences.

With the aid of a police dog, officers eventually found the suspect behind a house in the 1100 block of Irene Avenue, a couple of blocks south of the video store, Joyner said.

In the vicinity, police also found a bag the man had been carrying that held cash and videos believed to have been stolen during the robbery. Officers did not recover a gun, Joyner said.

Detectives were questioning the suspect Tuesday afternoon, Joyner said. As of Tuesday night, he had not been booked into the Allen County Jail.
