TinCaps snap 3-game losing streak

Hunter Renfroe hit a pinch-hit tie-breaking, two-run home run in the seventh inning and Mallex Smith also homered among his three hits as the TinCaps snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich.

Renfroe’s homer, his second, came with two outs off losing pitcher Josh Turley. Smith jump-started the TinCaps’ win with a leadoff home run in the first inning.

Fort Wayne (70-66, 27-40 second half) used three pitchers with Joe Church (3-3) getting the win. Church gave up three hits and a run over three innings with three walks and a strikeout. Matthew Shepherd went the first four innings for the TinCaps, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out four and walking two. Trevor Gott and Chris Nunn finished with an inning apiece.

Gabriel Quintana also had three hits including a double, and Alberth Martinez had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

The TinCaps return home tonight for the final three games of the regular season.
