CHEERS to all who helped to make the fifth annual Anthony Wayne Rotary 5K to Help Eradicate Polio such a huge success: more than 200 runners and walkers; some 12 Interact Club members from Leo, Carroll, and Northrop high schools; several Anthony Wayne Rotarians who showed up early and stayed late to help with set-up and tear-down; the timing crew under the leadership of Dave Devoe; the many who supplied door-prize items along with bottled water and food for runners, especially Pine Ridge Racquet & Fitness Club and Walgreens; the Fort Wayne Track Club for making this race one of their points races; and the spirited team competition between Anthony Wayne Rotary and the Fort Wayne Downtown Rotary. A special shout-out goes to my co-race director and the new director for this race, Desiree Koger-Gustafson. A sizable check will be sent to Rotary International’s Polio Plus Fund as a result of this race, marking a total of nearly $10,000 over the past five years.

CHEERS to the collaboration between Junior Achievement and Boy Scouts of America on the new Parkview Muddy Trail Run 5K event, which will generate vital operating funds for each organization through an effective and efficient use of resources. My wife and I raised our son to be a solid community member and a self-sufficient citizen. Because we also wanted him to have a variety of experiences, we looked within our community for additional opportunities. We are fortunate that such strong youth-serving organizations exist. I’m proud to be associated with these two organizations. I encourage others to learn more about how this partnership is raising funds to ensure that these volunteer-driven organizations can mentor youth and help prepare them for lifelong personal and economic success. Visit www.MuddyTrailRun.com and join me in getting muddy for kids.
