Irish open with win; Kelly to get contract extension

SOUTH BEND – Notre Dame opened the season with a 28-6 win over Temple, and coach Brian Kelly will add a few years to his contract.

A Notre Dame spokesman confirmed that the university will announce a contract extension for Kelly today. NBC first reported the extension during the broadcast of Saturday's game.

Kelly led the Irish to a 12-0 regular season and the BCS championship game last season. Notre Dame lost 42-14 to Alabama in the title game.

Kelly is 29-11 at Notre Dame, and he picked up his 200th coaching victory Saturday. Kelly is 82-33 as a Division I coach and went 118-35-2 with two national titles with Division II Grand Valley State.

As for the win, quarterback Tommy Rees had a career day for the No. 14 Irish. The senior threw for a career-high 346 yards and completed the longest play of his career when tight end Troy Niklas scored on a 66-yard reception in the second quarter.

Rees complete 16 of 23 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Both of his touchdowns went to receiver DaVaris Daniels with each scoring toss traveling 32 yards.

Daniels didn't finish the game after he came up limping late in the second quarter.

Running back George Atkinson III, who an for 34 yards, scored Notre Dame's other touchdown with a 2-yard plunge in the third quarter. Amir Carlisle led the Irish's running game with 68 yards on seven carries.

Notre Dame receiver TJ Jones also had a big day, pulling in six catches for 138 yards. It was the senior's first 100-yard receiving game.
