TinCaps break 3-game losing streak

Hunter Renfroe hit a pinch-hit tie-breaking, two-run home run in the seventh inning and Mallex Smith also homered among his three hits as the TinCaps snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the West Michigan WhiteCaps at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich.

Renfroe’s homer, his second, came with two outs off losing pitcher Josh Turley. Smith jump-started the TinCaps’ win with a lead-off home run in the first inning

Fort Wayne (70-66, 27-40 second half) used three pitchers with Joe Church (3-3) getting the win with three innings of three-hit, 1-run work. Church walked three and struck out one. Matthew Shepherd started for the TinCaps and went the first four innings giving up two hits and no runs while striking out four and walking two.

Trevor Gott and Chris Nunn finished the game with an inning apiece.

Designated Hitter Gabriel Quintana also had three hits including a double, and Alberth Martinez had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run.
