Columbia City rallies around injured linebacker

– While Columbia City linebacker/running back Sam Dailey remains in critical condition at Lutheran Hospital, the community begins to rally around the senior captain.

There are already plans to have T-shirts available for sale for Friday’s home game against Whitley County rival Whitko for Dailey and more fundraising events are on the way, including a hog roast benefit Oct. 5 at the Jefferson-Center Fire Department, with a silent auction, face painting among other planned activities.

Also, there are donation cans at the Columbia City Dairy Queen.

Social media, including #PrayforSam, have had messages constantly for Dailey since last Friday.

“This is a caring, service-centered community,” said Whitley County Consolidated Schools superintendent Patricia O’Connor, who wouldn’t comment further, citing privacy laws.

Dailey suffered a head injury during the Eagles’ 33-14 loss at Warsaw last Friday.

Dailey was eventually taken to Lutheran Hospital and had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, Eagles coach Randy Hudgins said Saturday. Hudgins said Dailey was injured while trying to make a tackle in the third quarter against the Tigers.

About 100 friends, family and teammates were at the hospital in support of Dailey and his family last Friday night after the game, Hudgins said.
