Police and fire

Father, son escape drive-by gun attack

A man and his 7-month-old son escaped injury this week when someone opened fire on their vehicle in south Fort Wayne, police said.

The man told police he was driving Thursday afternoon with his son near Colonial Avenue and South Anthony Boulevard, when someone in a gray Dodge Charger leaned out of the passenger window and shot at the his vehicle at least four times, the report stated.

The man said he fled the area and called police, who found a bullet hole near the trunk of his vehicle, the report said.

Shortly afterward, police spotted a similar-looking Charger at a gas station. The car fled police and later crashed at the Twin Oaks apartment complex.

Two men inside the Charger ran, and both were later caught. One of the men, Jaymaris Alexander, 20, was arrested and charged with a felony count of resisting law enforcement and a misdemeanor count of resisting, the report stated. Alexander was being held without bond Friday at the Allen County Lockup in a separate, unrelated misdemeanor case.

The second man who fled the car was not charged. A third man who was in the car during the shooting eluded officers. Police did not find a gun in the car or along the path of the pursuit, the report stated.
