Cheers & jeers

CHEERS to my wife Mary, a loving spouse, do-it-all mom and dedicated educator. Now she is a real hero for her incredible courage and genuine benevolence in donating a kidney to a lifelong neighborhood friend. She is a true angel.

JEERS to the gawkers who invaded the Lakeside area to watch the fire on Herbert Street. These people rudely clogged the streets of our neighborhood as we were trying to make it home that afternoon. The residents were dealing with acrid smoke and an extended power outage. But, above all, these rubberneckers were so disrespectful to the citizens who lost their businesses and to our first responders who had a huge job to do.

CHEERS to Brevin’s restaurant in Churubusco. On Aug. 10 we stopped for breakfast. When our food arrived, I noticed my purse was missing. We paid for our breakfast, not eaten, and left. A couple of hours later the restaurant called and informed me they had found my purse. When I picked it up, they had returned the money we paid for our uneaten breakfast with a note to come back and have breakfast soon.

CHEERS to the kind postman on Doyle Road the morning of Aug. 12. My muffler dropped and was dragging. He stopped, crawled under my car and tied it up for me. I regret that I did not get his name, but he is tops in my book.

CHEERS to the couple who paid for our lunch when I took my 3-year-old son for his first experience at Coney Island. They had not come planning to pay extra. I was very embarrassed as I made the mistake of thinking I could use my debit card there. I will pay it forward.

CHEERS to The Journal Gazette for drawing attention to hand-held cellphone use while driving.

CHEERS to everyone who helped make our Summer Pup-nic & Ice Cream Social on Aug. 4 a huge success. We raised $3,000 and collected more than 400 pounds of pet food to help keep pets at home with their families. Cheers to all the vendors who participated and to all the businesses that generously donated items for our raffle prizes. A very special Cheers to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this pet-friendly event so enjoyable for the 200 to 300 people who attended.
