Cold truth on scoops: Chocolate is favorite

The decision is a hard one. Should you go traditional or a little more out there?

Well, if you want to follow what other Americans do, chocolate is the way to go, as 27 percent of people surveyed say it is one of their two favorite ice cream flavors, according to a Harris Poll last month by Harris Interactive. Vanilla was second at 23 percent, followed by cookie dough and cookies and cream at 22 percent each.

Other top choices include butter pecan and Swiss almond (19 percent), mint chocolate chip (19 percent), strawberry (14 percent), rocky road (12 percent) and peanut butter (10 percent).

And 2 percent – gasp! – say they do not eat ice cream.

When it comes to gender preference, women chose chocolate as their top flavor, while men picked vanilla.

And to top it all off, over half of those surveyed say hot fudge is their favorite topping, followed by nuts. And please serve that up in a cup, as 45 percent say they prefer their ice cream that way instead of in a cone (31 percent).
