Pot suspect draws 20 years for rape

Vroom

A man already facing a five-year federal prison sentence for growing marijuana was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for rape.

Jarrod Vroom, 40, was charged with the crime in November, accused of sexually assaulting a mentally impaired woman.

The adult woman, who functions at the mental capacity of a 4-year-old and cannot legally consent to sex, became pregnant because of the attack.

Vroom was working on remodeling a house owned by the woman’s guardian and is accused of having sex with the woman while the guardian was away from the house to get supplies. The pregnancy came to light months later.

After the woman gave birth to the child, the baby died while in foster care in another state, according to court documents.

Vroom pleaded guilty to rape in July, and Thursday, Allen Superior Court Judge John Surbeck sentenced Vroom to 20 years in prison, according to court files.

In the unrelated marijuana case, Vroom and Jason Bridges were accused of growing and selling marijuana at Bridges’ home in the Lake Everett area of Allen County.
