A Fort Wayne attorney is exploring a run in the GOP primary for Rep. Phyllis Pond's House District 85 seat.
Pond, R-New Haven, has served since 1978 and in recent years has had increasing health problems.
Casey Cox, 31, said he called Pond a few weeks ago to let her know his intentions, and filed his campaign finance paperwork.
"I have a lot of respect for her," he said. "I've had a long interest in public policy and been involved in other public service opportunities."
Cox said he has talked with numerous people encouraging him to take the next step and run for office.
He is interested in economic development and higher education issues, noting he served as the student trustee at Indiana University several years ago. IPFW would be in his district if elected.
Pond is up for a new two-year term next year, though there have been many rumors about her future. Some think she will simply choose not to seek re-election. Others believe she will resign later this year and have a caucus appointment an interim replacement. Or she could run for her 19th term.
She didn't return calls seeking comment.
