Mike Bentz is getting ready to put on a show.
The owner of Crackerjack Catering is taking the leap into brick-and-mortar restaurants with his latest venture – Crave. A cross between fine dining and barbecue, Bentz plans to offer steaks, seafood and other items cooked on an outdoor smoker.
I’d like to do a Friday night grill night and I’d like to serve beer and wine – that’s the intention, he says of the restaurant, which will occupy the former Honey on the Table location, 2461 Hobson Road.
Bentz says he will be limited, in part, by the equipment in the building because it does not have the appropriate ventilation to cook with an open flame.
We’ll have to be creative with how we cook and what we’re cooking, he says.
The crew is in full cleanup mode and working to reconfigure the former restaurant/marketplace, as well as move in his catering business. Bentz is hoping to be up and running in 30 days.
New owner, name
Regular customers of Yum-Mee’s can rest assured that Saturday morning, the beignets will be ready.
But change is afoot at the 1320 E. State Blvd. bakery. There’s a new name, a new owner and new menu items.
Krystal Vega bought the business from Terry Mee and reopened it this week as Zinnia’s Bakehouse. The shop will continue to offer cupcakes and cookies – which Vega had been preparing as head baker under Mee – and added empanadas and biscotti. Breads will return in about a month, allowing the new team to get settled in.
There will be a grand reopening Saturday, with live music from 10 a.m. to noon, raffles and specials.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Satek Winery was awarded two trophies and 22 medals, including three Double Gold Medals, in the INDY International Wine Competition, which took place last week at Purdue University.
The Fremont winery received a trophy for Indiana-Grown, French-America Wine of the Year for its Larry’s Luscious Dry Red 2012 and for the Indiana-Grown, American Wine for the Year for its Steuben 2012.
Satek also took home three Double Gold Medals for its Steuben 2012, Larry’s Luscious 2012 and Kreibaum Bay Cabernet Reserve 2010. A Double Gold Medal is awarded when the judging panel unanimously awards a wine a gold medal.

There’s all kinds of good stuff going on for Courtney Hamm – and not just in the oven of one of her bakeries.
Hamm, owner of Courtney’s Bakery, is expanding her business with the purchase of a downtown building. The 435 E. Brackenridge St. location will serve as a commissary for her three shops.
It’s about 10,000 square feet, and it’s going to really increase our production space, she says, adding that baking for the shops and custom orders will take place there. More ovens, more employees.
Also, the 10812 Coldwater Road location is going to move – two miles down the road – and expand its offerings. Much like the Georgetown location, the new site at 7773 Coldwater Road, will offer coffee drinks and espresso in addition to the rotating monthly menu of 15 to 16 cupcakes.

Auburn Deli, 115 N. Main St. in Auburn, is closing its doors.
Owner Rex Carroll calls the decision bittersweet and says the last day for business will be Aug. 16.
I have made the difficult decision to pursue a different path and new opportunities that do not allow me to devote the necessary time to running the deli, Carroll said in a Facebook announcement.
