Just my 2 cents on the goalie addition. I think that Muse will be a very good fit for the Komets. I thought that about Effinger from last year. He was one of the top 3 goalies in the CHL the previous year. I think Effinger and Cousineau would have had better stats if they had a decent defense in front of them. In 2012 when the Komets won the CHL Championship, Boucher was the main man inbetween the pipes. We had a few scrubs for back-ups, Kangus and Beech. When the K's picked up Festa on a trade, they picked up a good back up. When Boucher was out for the 4-game suspension, Festa took over and did an awesome job. If I'm not mistaken, in those 4 games, he went 3-1? Kangus and Beech would have lost all 4 games for sure! Festa is a very scrappy goalie for his size. His style of play is very energetic. I would like to see what he could do with a decent defense in front of him. My girlfriend follows K's players on Twitter and she told me that Festa has been in town for the past month hanging with Shrocky. Im sure we will see him in camp, not sure if he will make the team. I know there might be nay-sayers on Festa's abilities. But look at Effingers and Cousineau's stats from last year. VERY lack luster at best. Why? No defense in front of them. Im sure Festa would have done as well as them. As you can tell, I'm a Festa fan! But whoever makes the team this year, I will root for them 100%!

Alan, I like that you mentioned Flemming. Nobody seems to be talking about him much, but I agree with you on him becoming one of the fan favorites. I must say that I really like the way the roster is looking myself. I would like to see a solid D-man signed and I will feel even better.

Solid Veteran D-man I meant to say.

I personally think butler should be our veteran d man and don't care what anyone says he was consistent didn't turn the puck over and had great passion for the game and why question festa he had better numbers than bouch in shootouts and did very well when he came in I think that suits well for a backup?

Is this the new episode of the Twilight Zone?
Bring Back Butler?
Pass me the Cheetohs, A Glass of Tang, and a scoop of orange sherbet.
Either you all have lost your minds, or I am having a nightmare.

The way I understand it, as the higher leagues have their camps and the cuts are made, some of those guys will be invited to the K's camp. That may well be a good strategy to get some better talent with less risk of callup.
No flashy stars that way but some solid guys who will compete for spots. But the upside is they may be here longer than the flashy stars.
I don't know, a team is a tricky thing. It's hard to tell on paper what they will be. Need to see how the chemistry is before a judgement can be made.
I am, however, hopeful. Ignorant and hopeful!

Nothing against Butler, but I am hoping for an established ECHL veteran D man.

Really? Butler? Lol might as well bring back andy townsend too!

Knowing that we all have our favorites, it's always hard to be critical of the way some guys played. Especially looking back to different seasons, different teams. So in response to the thoughts of HockeyKnowHow and KometFan, I'm in the belief that neither Festa nor Butler will have an opportunity to earn a place on this roster.
My own opinion would be that if I had to choose between the two and I could afford the veteran designation, Butler would have a more compelling argument.
As I review the roster, I think there will be some tough decisions to be made in camp. Both upfront and back on defense.
Isn't it true that Coach Graham has been quoted that he'd like another veteran D-man? Isn't he still looking for a forward with some size also? As good as this roster is, they aren't finished piecing it together. Still two vet slots to work with or maybe use one or both later in the year.
As Writes Right Shoots Left alluded to in his comment, I'm very positive that Coach Graham will be watching all the cuts made in camps to try to pick out someone who slipped through or fills a particular need.
The total caveat in all this would be injuries. Injuries are a part of sports but aside from that and all things being equal, the players signed, those who are yet to sign, and the very skilled manner in which this roster has come together, point to a very successful, fun year.

yeah hit somebody great orange references but you remind me of someone who was booing our k's last year when they weren't doing so hot I don't care that u think festa and butler shouldn't come back because I know decent players when I see them and I never said those guys were superstars festa would be a solid backup with a good d in front of him and butler was our best d man last year besides mags and schaus now that's not saying much because our lackluster d but I thought he was a great player/personality all in one and not only ur skills come onto the ice its skills personality and work ethic all rolled in one

We should bring them all back. I also want Leo Thomas back. He not only can light up this league with 10 or 15 points, he can be the assistant coach and take care of fans that boo poor effort and a poorly put together team.
It's awesome you love the Komets. But there is huge difference between a Gerry Festa who is a marginal CHL backup/FHL-SPHL Starter...and ECHL goalies. Guy like Butler are great if you have 7 veteran spots like in the IHL2. But you have to use your Veteran spots wisely in his league. Our Defense was TERRIBLE last season. TERRIBLE.
Here's hoping this team is an improvement and fun to watch.
If we don't affiliate with an AHL team or 2, where are we gonna get players when we have injuries or turnover? FHL/SPHL again? That worries me. Our Payroll has to be a concern too. Affiliated players only count as $500/$550 I believe towards the salary cap weekly...if we don't have those players, how can we make the salary cap and not SUCK???

Lol, can't believe we are talking about bringing Butler back???? He's a nice guy, no question..bringing him back? How well was our "D" last season? Psst.... I did some booing last year, wow that feels good! I figure after being a season ticket holder this long, I can cheer when we do well, be sad when we lost the close ones and boo when the team doesn't....well did you go to games last year? The Komets have "brought back" players who should not have made the team let alone take a V spot just because of $$$! Let's not make that mistake. Just because someone...didn't name any names Justin...likes a player who wouldn't make ANY other team, doesn't make a fit on this team. I'm just happy we have who we have.

I boo poor effort, not losing, so yeah, I did some booing last year. Actually, I did a lot of booing last year. I stopped going to games. It was an effort thing, not a losing thing. That's something some folks don't understand. This isn't a show up and everybody gets an award league.
Seriously, what's wrong with being upset with the product you pay for, especially when you can see the effort (or lack thereof) with your own eyes? I'm not going to call the folks at Samsung and cheer 'em on when I pull a new TV out of the box and it doesn't work.

I see where Wheeling signed Mike Ratchuk. It got me wondering whether the Komets had any conversations with him or even any interest at all.
I know they were very high on him when he was here (for a few games, anyway) a few years ago.
I think this has been a pretty good week for the K's. I'm not sure anybody really thought that Maggio would be here, so his part in the Pepin trade didn't surprise me.
Kind of an interesting stat: Within 24 hours the Komets signed the 2012 CHL Playoff MVP and the 2012 ECHL Playoff MVP (Vaskivuo and Muse). That doesn't happen very often, does it?
Kind of makes ya' look forward to next week doesn't it?

Hockey Know How - I believe that is a violation of Justin's "play nice!" policy.
Posted by Writes Right Shoots Left (222 posts) at 6:51 pm Friday
how is it a violation all I did was disagree with what he said? I do agree we had a very very poor defense last year and I was upset with many players efforts I couldn't stand how our best player (marino) would get tossed around and "bullied" and no one did a thing about it don't get me wrong I wasn't exactly 100 percent happy w the season last year but I think its a lil disrespectful to boo your team no matter how long u have been a ticketholder being an athlete myself it would upset me esp if I wasn't the one giving lackluster effort jus my point
Posted by HockeyKnowHow (69 posts) at 7:02 pm Friday
HockeyKnowHow - You said you didn't boo and you find those that did disrespectful, so I'm wondering, did you cheer last years team?
Posted by RDMann (71 posts) at 9:02 pm Friday
Well as "athletes" know they are in the public eye doing "entertainment"! They are paid to do something they love and what others enjoy to see, it is like singing or watching a movie! People pay to see them and hope to be entertained and when not, that's how they express themselves..."athletes" should understand fans are not booing them, just their performance!! Would you pay a whole season to see Roseanne Barr sing the national anthem???? No offense to "athletes".....

More Komets needed to be brought back from last years team=Brittain, Henley, Wheeler.
Posted by mightbite mightbite (1612 posts) at 9:50 am Saturday
Why don't we just bring the entire team back and give them another chance? They really seemed nice, and maybe just this once, nice guys can finish first?
Posted by RDMann (71 posts) at 11:13 am Saturday
Brittain is the only one that I would be ok with coming back. He spent most of his time in the A last year and will probably continue to do so. I doubt that we will be seeing him back. Henley and Wheeler no thanks. Not in this league.

Hope nobody "booooooo's" HKH....he might
I agree, if they give peace poor efforts, they get booed....that is the deal. And real athletes and hockey players would expect it. Plus, athletes block out what is said most of the time. If they are that thin skinned....they should join the ice capades or the ballet. This is hockey for craps sake.
Festa and Butler neither should be on this ECHL team. Nice guys, and sexy, but not good enough to play on a contending hockey team. Just bringing back fan favorites will get you seasons like we had last season, and seasons like Eville continues to have.
That is all.

I may be a day late and many dollars short here. I just had to say that there is no way that I could support Larry Sterling if he was a Komet and keep a straight face about it. I will always have in the back of my mind the echoes of "Larry....Larry.....Larry...." being chanted by many K fans followed by some of the things that I have personally yelled at him. I just hope this year will not be Year 2 of something that I started saying when the crowd was asked to chant "Let's Go Komets". Let's just say that it rhymes with Komet.

If you've ever wondered what the breakdown is of game experience by league, today is your lucky day!
As of today, 8/12/13, the forwards bring with them these totals: AHL-79 games.
CHL- 998 games.
SPHL- 153 games.
The defense measures up with these figures: AHL- 117 games.
ECHL- 362 games.
CHL- 15 games.
SPHL- 28 games.
What do these figures prove or mean? Well, nothing really, except to those who are looking for more ECHL experience.
